SPY PICS: 2025 BMW M5 duo conquer Green Hell

Double trouble as BMW continues to refine its next-generation M5 sedan and Touring wagon

The 2025 BMW M5 and its Touring twin have both been spotted performance testing at the Nurburgring (again) – this time with less camouflage than any previous sighting, giving us a clear look at some of the big new German sports sedan and wagon’s finer design details.

First port of call is the front-end, where the headlights have now been unmasked and are essentially identical to that of the standard 5 Series models, meaning all of the new M5’s extra aggression will come from a bumper design that’s clearly angrier than that of other eighth-generation G60-series variants.

The centrepiece of the arrangement is a trapezoid lower air intake that is inverted compared to the lesser grades, delivering a more menacing look with a heap of different segments, braces and elements to help it stand apart.

All the camo wrap has been removed from the doors and reveals a refreshingly smooth pair of flanks – again as per other new 5 Series models – whereas the rear-end is still shrouded with camo, although we can still see the rear bumper will mimic the front-end’s trapezoidal theme.

It’s a similar story with the M5 Touring, even if this prototype still has its door camo in place, and our Euro sources tell us both models will ride on 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, shrouding a monstrous high-performance braking system currently headlined by gold callipers.

Said braking system will be responsible for hauling up some 2000kg-plus of mass, given new M5s will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid system outputting more than 530kW/1000Nm and (probably) capable of hitting 100km/h in less than three seconds.

The electric motor will be powered by an 18.6kWh lithium-ion battery in a combination that’s expected to offer about 80km of electric range.

An eight-speed automatic transmission will send power to all four wheels in both the new M5 sedan and Touring, setting up an intriguing battle with the Audi RS 6 Avant GT and the eventual Mercedes-AMG E 63 S, which will also adopt plug-in hybrid tech for its forthcoming generation.
