There’s a momentous overhaul of Audi’s naming structure on the way and today we have another example of it: the 2026 Audi A7 Allroad has been spotted testing on the Nurburgring.
Any Audi fan will tell you the A7 nameplate has always been affixed to the back of the German car-maker’s large four-door Sportback ‘coupe’, the swoopier fastback sibling to the A6 sedan and Avant wagon.
Well, now the A7 badge will be applied to every large combustion-powered Audi passenger model across the Sportback, Avant and sedan body styles, given the A6 nomenclature will soon apply only to equivalent EVs including the S6 and RS 6 e-trons.
It will be the same story for the A4/S4/RS 4 and A5/S5/RS 5: even number for the EV, odd for the combustion and/or hybrid models.
With this in mind, the A7 Allroad is the new-generation replacement for the popular A6 Allroad that injected an extra bit of all-terrain versatility into the A6 Avant via extra ground clearance, retuned suspension and extra body cladding.
Immediately apparent on this prototype is that signature increase in ground clearance, but even the A7 Allroad – theoretically the least-sporty member of the upcoming portfolio – will retain some of the A7’s hallmark curves, in the form of a tapered roofline and curved tailgate.
Said tailgate is adorned with a full-width tail-light and a sporty-looking roof spoiler, although there’s little unique to report at the front beyond neatly flared wheel-arches that will undoubtedly be painted a different colour to the body in production form.
The prototype looks to be missing the signature charge port cover of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which suggests the A7 Allroad will have either a mild-hybrid or self-charging hybrid powertrain of some description, though the former is more likely at this early stage.
Our European sources tell us the A7 Allroad will be released globally in mid-2026, probably after the rest of the A7 Avant range and the initial A7 sedan line-up.
