It might only be 18 months since Peugeot updated its 307 small car, but the French maker is reportedly pulling out all stops to debut its replacement later this year.
The pressure is coming from the likes of Fiat and Volkswagen which are both looking to debut new entrants into the volume market. Thus the new 307, logically dubbed the 308 (and pictured here in winter testing), has been brought forward from its Geneva 2008 anticipated unveiling to this September's Frankfurt Motor Show.
And the French maker is holding an extra ace up its sleeve -- it will launch the new 308 in both three and five-door variants. In addition, like Volkswagen with its CrossGolf, PSA is believed to be developing an SUV-style high-ride variant of the 308, though without all-wheel drive. Expect the normal convertible-coupe and wagons to also follow -- perhaps at the Paris Show in late 2008.
The 308 will follow the proven template of its predecessor but overall length is said to have grown by about 40mm to 4250mm, while its height has been slightly reduced.
The 308 will use a version of the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol powerplant that is currently featured in the 207 (more
) and MINI R56 Series (more ). There'll also be a 2.2-litre turbodiesel and perhaps a sporty 'RC' version with the MINI Cooper S's 210hp turbo petrol four.-- with Carparazzi
