SPY PICS: Audi A4 – new pics

The B9 generation of Audi A4 is on track for a debut in Frankfurt

A number of heritage styling cues will be carried over with the next generation of Audi A4, but as these spy shots show, the B9 generation will also go for a sleeker profile around the front end – taking some inspiration from the TT.

We've explained previously all there is to know at this stage about the new A4, but just to recap, it will be built on Audi's MLB2 architecture, with the engines mounted longitudinally (north/south). The continuously variable 'Multitronic' transmission has had its day – and we won't see its like again in this new model. Instead, Audi will offer the option of six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmissions.

Big news, in some quarters at least, is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid variant. Audi will continue to offer the new car in a range of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (quattro) variants.

Inside the new car, Audi's designers have reportedly opted for a 'minimalist' look, but one embracing the TT's virtual cockpit facility.

There has been some talk recently of production delay for the new A4 – and the projected Frankfurt debut may be at least three months before full-scale production commences – but Audi Australia told motoring.com.au as long ago as September last year that the new A4 wasn't to be expected here before 2016.
