SPY PICS: Audi on track with new RS 4

Steroidal A4 variant is coming to Oz, but not until 2018 at the earliest

Although the much-anticipated RS 4 version of the recently-launched Audi A4 is well down the developmental path, the time gap between it and its more restrained stable mates is expected to be substantial. With the European launch expected in late 2017/early 2018, Australia is not likely to see it until later in 2018.

As already reported, the next generation of Audi RS 4s will be powered by 3.0-litre turbo V6s, not traditional 4.2-litre V8s. But that is hardly likely to be a bad thing with power outputs expected to top those of current RS4s that produce naturally aspirated figures of 331kW and 430Nm. Kilowatts up to 340kW, along with muscular turbo-boosted torque outputs well in excess of 500Nm, have been mooted.

The RS 4 is expected to use the eight-speed Tiptronic ZF auto gearbox already seen in the RS 6, RS 7 and S8, augmenting its power transference via quattro all-wheel drive and a Torsen rear differential.

These spy photos show the RS 4 Avant on an urban shakedown test, showing off its monster wheels, dual exhausts, flared wheel arches and air-gulping front end. The rumour mill is suggesting the RS 4 will come in sedan, hatchback and Avant form as shown here. Whether Australia will continue with just the Avant wagon model is not likely to be known before launch time rolls around.

When it arrives, the twin-turbo RS 4 V6 engine will already have a ring of familiarity as Audi has already launched the single-turbo 260kW/500Nm S4 version in Europe.

The Audi RS 4 is expected to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2017.
