These photos are the best evidence yet that Audi is preparing to unleash a red-hot, light-weight version of its R8 supercar. Known as the Clubsport, this new track weapon has been spotted looking near-production ready at Germany's Nurburging race circuit by our spies at Carparazzi.
As these shots show, the matte black machine is sporting a re-designed aerodynamic package. The front spoiler has sprouted winglets on either side for more downforce but the real changes are at the rear.
The most obvious addition is the large fixed wing that stretches across the width of rear deck. But look closer and you'll notice the lower bumper has been completely overhauled. The rear diffuser is now larger and more aggressive, there are extra vents behind the rear wheels and large round exhaust pipes replace the oval tips on the regular V10.
Although Audi is staying tight-lipped, speculation is rife that the Clubsport will shed 50kg of weight and ditch the company's famous quattro system in favour of the rear-wheel drive only format used in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 'Valentino Balboni'.
There will also reportedly be more power and the six-speed manual will be the only gearbox option.
Although dropping quattro would be a major departure for the brand, it would bring the R8 Clubsport closer to the GT3 racing version of the R8.
November's Essen Motor Show is tipped as the most likely stage for the car's debut ahead of an on sale date in the first quarter of 2010.
