A heavily disguised Audi A3 cabrio undergoing testing has been snapped by the spy photographers at Automedia. The all-new topless Audi is aimed squarely at BMW’s 1 Series and will be based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform architecture which is shared with the rest of the A3 range and a raft of other VW Group models including the popular new Golf Mk7, Skoda Octavia as well as the new generation TT, Q3 and VW Tiguan. The cloth roof is understood to be draped over an interior that is not only high quality, but almost as commodious as the cabin found in the A4 line-up.
Fashion savvy A3 cabrio buyers are said to be tempted with a number of engine choices including standard 2.0-litre turbo petrol and diesel variants that are said to offer around 165kW and 105kW respectively.
Drivers who enjoy the wind ruffling their hair at a hurried pace, will be able to choose from the sporty S3 Quattro that produces around 223kW from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol powerplant.
Those who are after even more grunt than the S3 can opt for the ranging-topping RS3, which is rumoured to pump out between 283kW and 298kW from its turbocharged inline five. A six speed manual gearbox is standard across the range, with a six speed dual-clutch transmission available as an option on the A3 and S3 and a seven speed dual-clutch ('S tronic') transmission on the options list for the RS3.
Stay tuned for our first drive of the new drop-top model in coming weeks.
