New spy photos provide a slightly more informative view of some of the car's detailing and overall profile than our last news story on the new-generation W167 GLE Mercedes-Benz.
Although it appears the Benz SUV will continue with essentially the same proportions as the current W166 model, the new GLE will get a bluff frontal aspect that brings a masculine look further aided by slightly squared-off wheel arches. The cleaned-up side window line looks curvier too, although it's hard to say whether or not the wrap-around window disguising the C-pillar will continue.
What we know so far about the next-gen GLE is that it will run on the new MHA platform, contributing to a significant weight loss, and will be available in rear-drive as well as all-wheel drive form.
Powertrains are expected to continue as a refinement of the current line-up including four-cylinder and V6 petrol and diesel engines that will be followed by hot turbo V8s. Nine and seven-speed automatic transmissions will likely carry over for the W167 model.
Despite the GLE maintaining a healthy share of overall Mercedes-Benz SUV sales (it's outpointed by smaller GLA and GLC models), the former M-Class is well and truly ready to be put out to pasture, as it lags behind BMW's X5 and Land Rover's Range Rover Sport, and has Audi's Q7 and Porsche's Cayenne breathing down its neck.
