It’s been barely a month since our spy photographers spotted a heavily camouflaged 2025 Audi RS 5 Avant testing in the wild, and now the garden-variety A5 wagon has emerged almost undisguised.
Caught testing in Germany, the next-generation A4 replacement will be underpinned by an all-new platform and wear a much sleeker exterior design as Audi transitions further into electrification – as indicated by the Audi RS 5 PHEV.
The incoming new A5 Avant is lower and wider than the outgoing A4 version, with a much slipperier silhouette giving it more of a shooting brake look than a traditional wagon.
The aero vibes are hammered home by the narrow front fascia and headlight combination as well as an integrated bonnet line, smoother surfaces and flush door handles.
Our sources tell us the new A5 will retain some small-capacity internal combustion engines but the focus will be on plug-in hybrid versions in the middle and upper reaches of the line-up.
Audi has previously announced its even-numbered models would evolve into EVs while the odd numbers would be saved for internal combustion and hybrid models, hence the A5 Avant superseding the A4.
Based on these images alone, the new RS 5 should be a formidable beast both to drive and look at given the standard model gives off S5 levels of aggression and purposefulness.
The previous RS 5 images revealed gaping intakes, huge brakes and an intimidating frown to the front-end, while the bonnet we’re anticipating at least 400kW/800Nm from an electrified twin-turbo V6.
The standard A5 models are expected to have four-cylinder engines, including the PHEVs, however it’s unclear whether the next S5 will pack four or six cylinders. Either way it’ll be a plug-in hybrid.
