SPY PICS: BMW 2 Series Convertible

Drop-top version of BMW's baby coupe looks all but production-ready
The Automedia lenses have been at it again, this time capturing an almost undisguised BMW 2 Series Convertible prototype that looks essentially showroom-ready.
As evident from the accompanying pics, the drop-top carries over pretty much everything barring the roof from the coupe version that launched here in March this year.
Unlike the larger 4 Series Convertible and Z4, which have folding metal roofs, the 2 Series Cabrio makes do with a canvas top, in the interests of saving weight and cost. The canvas roof doesn't appear to have hurt the car's proportions, although the ragtop perhaps looks a bit bulky when viewed from the rear.
The 2 Series Convertible is expected to carry a slight weight penalty vis-à-vis its coupe sibling, and it will obviously sacrifice some torsional rigidity, but the drivetrain and suspension layout will be unchanged.
The powerplant line-up will include a selection of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units, and topping the range initially will be the M235i, sporting the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo six as the coupe.
Euro buyers will have the option of choosing a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but only the latter is expected to be offered in our clutch-averse market.
Reports suggest there will be an M2 later in the 2 Series' life cycle, pushing out in excess of 260kW. It should be a firecracker, as the existing M235i coupe is already no slouch with its outputs of 240kW and 450Nm.
The addition of the Convertible will further bolster the 2 Series line-up, which already includes the Coupe and Active Tourer variants.
Among its chief rivals when the 2 Series Convertible launches internationally in a couple of months will be the Audi A3 Cabriolet that debuted last year at the Frankfurt motor show.
