What has two doors, a powerful engine and goes without a polarising grille design like the new BMW 4 Series Coupe?
The new BMW 2 Series Coupe, that’s what!
Unlike the front-drive BMW 1 Series hatch and 2 Series Gran Coupe sedan, the incoming 2 Series Coupe will remain true to its predecessors with a rear-drive layout, which should make it a more engaging drive.
Spied in Germany undergoing dynamic testing at the challenging Nurburgring road course, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe will arrive in Australia next year.
The vehicle in question features large alloy wheels, a low ride height and twin exhaust pipes, suggesting it’s a mid- to high-spec model, possibly the 235i.
BMW’s entry-level coupe will be powered by a range of turbo-petrol engines, including the same range-topping 2.0-litre four-cylinder as the BMW M135i, which belts out 225kW and an AMG A35-besting 450Nm of torque.
There has also been talk of a BMW M240i Coupe which would bring six-cylinder turbocharged power to bear.
BMW has previously said it will not build a front-drive M car, which means the 1 Series hatch and 2 Series Gran Coupe are off the table – but the new BMW 2 Series is rear-drive, which means a BMW M2 is very much on the table.
The new BMW M3 and M4 models are about to be revealed and will be packing a monstrous new twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine that generates a cheek-rippling 375kW/600Nm.
It remains to be seen if the BMW M2 Coupe will get that much mumbo.
The 2 Series Coupe will get a fresh new look that won’t ape controversial grille design of the BMW 4 Series – and M4.
The BMW 4 Series Coupe has a vertically elongated grille, which is in line with BMW’s historical designs that have always provoked opinion, including the Bangle-butted vehicles – most famously on the E65 BMW 7 Series.
However, based on the spy photos it appears as though the 2 Series Coupe will not tempt fate with a similar design.
Expect manual and automatic transmissions to be offered.
