Following our spy-photo story revealing details of the upcoming new-generation G30 BMW 5 Series, now we have a visual of the hotshot B5 Alpina Touring version that is expected to follow the mainstream models’ introduction early in 2017.
Word is that the 5 Series Alpinas will be available in Touring and sedan form, and will most likely use BMW’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, tuned to punch out something like 450kW (The quad exhausts of the test mule indicate what’s under the bonnet in these spy photos).
It is also being said a 260kW version of BMW’s 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder engine could be on the cards. Either would benefit hugely from the 100kg weight reduction expected in the new G30/G31 5 Series.

In conjunction with the mammoth engine power, the Alpina BMWs can also be expected to get a big suspension upgrade, along with oversize wheels and some attention to the brakes as well as, probably, the driveline.
To make their mark out in the traffic, the 5 Series Alpinas will also receive some aerodynamic attention via integrated drag-reducing body additions. To further improve the Alpina’s handling/road holding qualities, the next-generation 5 Series will also be more torsionally rigid.
The B5 Series Alpina is expected to first see the light of day at the 87th Geneva motor show opening on March 9, 2017.
