SPY PICS: BMW fast-tracking next X5

Pre-production X5 prototype emerges as BMW prepares fresh SUV onslaught

BMW is set to deliver on its pledge to fast-track the next-generation X5 into production next year, after spy photographers spotted the new model in action.

As revealed by motoring.com.au in April, the German car-maker is set to replace the X5 as soon as next year, basing it on the same new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform that underpins the sixth-generation 7 Series limousine and the upcoming X7 full-sized SUV.

That means the current X5, which is barely three years old, will be ‘short-cycled’ well before a regular seven-year life-cycle.

The new architecture is likely to contribute to significant weight-saving on the new X5, taking in construction which blends carbon fibre-reinforced plastic with steel and aluminium. The same construction will also bring added rigidity and strength.

Little else is known about the exact dimensions and engines that will be made available, but expect the next-generation X5 to be a significant improvement on the model that continues to be Australia's top-selling large luxury SUV.
