BMW’s keenly awaited M4 Coupe (which will replace the existing E92 M3 Coupe) has been snapped in what looks like production-ready form by the Automedia lenses.
Although cloaked in lairy camouflage, the test mule captured here at the Nurburgring appears to have all the detailing in place, and the car’s stance is nicely pumped up by the black-painted 10-spoke alloys, behind which lurk substantial looking yellow brake calipers (signalling that this vehicle has ceramic discs).
To quickly recap: BMW’s new naming strategy now calls for all coupe (and coupe-mimicking sedan) models to have even prefixes – 2 Series, 4 Series, 6 Series, etc – while the conventional four-doors retain their 1 Series/3 Series/5 Series/7 Series nomenclatures.
This being the case, the iconic M3 nameplate will from now on apply only to the high-po sedan, with the coupe pictured here sharing its appellation with bustling motorways in Sydney and London.
Although its new nameplate may take some getting used to, there’s plenty to like about the brawny M4, even though the outgoing M3’s delightful free-spinning atmo V8 is consigned to the rubbish bin – making way for a clean-burning 3.0-litre twin-turbo six that should kick out around 330kW.
Drive from the turbo six is channelled to the rear wheels by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and some sources are tipping a 0-100km/h split around the 4.5sec mark (the current M3 Coupe takes 4.8sec).
Visually, the M4 stands apart from the lesser 4 Series models via its flared arches, side vents and quartet of tailpipes. Then there’s those delectable rims, which look to be 20-inchers.
The M4’s face is distinguished by a bespoke front bumper/spoiler assembly with three large lower intakes. Meanwhile, the bonnet features the traditional ‘power bulge’ in the centre.
As per its predecessor, the M4 also has a carbonfibre roof panel to save weight and lower the centre of gravity.
The M4 Coupe will be supplemented by cabriolet and Gran Coupe (four-door) models, with the first two due to launch late next year, and the Gran Coupe following in 2015.
