SPY PICS: BMW to up the ante with X6 M?

Spy pics indicate BMW is well on the way to announcing an ultimate sports version of the X6

Now that BMW is so vigorously pushing the Sports Activity Coupe nomenclature with its new X6 SUV, it should come as no surprise that an M version is on the drawing boards.

These pics snapped by the folk at Carparazzi show that the likelihood of an X6 M is indeed a reality, with some sources suggesting BMW will make an announcement before the end of this year.

The thinly disguised car spotted here on public roads on a wet European day gives little away other than the taped-over M-style vents aft of the front wheel arches, the muscular rework of the front bumper that integrates two sinister rows of LED fog lights replacing the regular, conventional setup and, up back, the quad exhaust outlets.

BMW says the X6 is different to other SUVs with its closer-to-road orientation, so the M version could be expected to lift the capabilities of the genre in sealed-road situations, but lower them even further off-road.

An obvious speculation is that an X6 M would be an eager recipient of the M5's 373kW/520Nm normally aspirated 5.0-litre V10. Cayenne Turbo and Benz ML63 might well be on notice here.

The X6 is currently available with the choice of two twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines: the 3.0-litre, 225kW/400Nm petrol engine as seen in the likes of BMW's 335i and also the 3.0-litre 210kW/580Nm turbodiesel from the X5 3.0sd.
