SPY PICS: BMW X3

These most recent pics of BMW’s third-generation X3 show the most detail we’ve yet seen of the 3 Series based mid-size SUV due in Australian showrooms early next year.

If you thought evolutionary was an over-used term in the auto industry, don’t file it away just yet because there’s no better way to describe the all-new X3’s looks.

It is really difficult to pick even subtle differences between the prototype X3 and the current model, especially around the turret/cabin area.

Side character line do appear to be changed, with a less sweeping, flatter profile which possibly terminates at the rear door handle rather than the tail lights. Subtle changes giving a cleaner, bolder treatment around the C-pillar could also be evident.

The big differences will be in the new “cluster architecture” CLAR platform underpinning the new X3: Although the car is expected to be longer overall – and therefore more spacious – it is also tipped to be lighter, by as much as 100kg, to improve performance, emissions and fuel economy.

Upgrades are planned for the four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engine line-up which will likely mirror that of the current model range.

It now seems certain an AWD xDrive X3 M -- using the 317kW/550Nm turbo six from the M3 -- is a definite starter.

As we've reported, the next-gen X3 -- BMW’s competitor for the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5 –- will make its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, followed by a full launch not long after.

A plug-in hybrid version will follow 18 months later using the same driveline as the BMW 330e, maybe stepped up a little in power to compensate for the X3’s extra weight.
