SPY PICS: BMW X3 M snapped

The long-rumoured BMW X3 M SUV appears set to become reality with the arrival of the new-generation X3

An M version of the next generation of BMW's mid-sized X3 SUV is in the wind and these spy photos of a prototype undergoing a track shakedown indicate it may be closer than you think.

To be based on BMW's new reduced-weight "Cluster Architecture" CLAR platform that will be rolled out across BMW's entire rear-drive/AWD range, the X3 M is expected to get the full pumped-arches, wide-body treatment, as well as much of the suspension componentry used in the M3/M4 models.

The scintillating 317kW/550Nm M3/M4 turbo six powerplant is already available to the X3 via the M3/M4, while the M version will also benefit from the XDrive AWD system to get its power to the road. There's also the potential to offer the choice between BMW's dual-clutch seven-speed transmission and a six-speed manual shifter.

The X3 M is expected to be joined by an X4 M SAV, although whether both will appear simultaneously is not known. There's also word that an M40i M Performance version, below the X3 M, will also be offered.

The X3 fits into the same category as the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5 – both of which are said to be in line for pumped-up AMG and RS-style variants.
