SPY PICS: BMW X4 Coupe

Production version of X4 spied during on-road tests

Following its concept debut at the Shanghai motor show, the BMW X4 has been spied during an on-road test.

Wearing BMW's now famed paisley camouflage, the X4 appears strikingly similar to the concept previewed in China earlier this year.

Based on the underpinnings of the X3, the X4 draws many of its styling cues from the larger X6. Though unlike its larger, sportier sibling, the X4 will place more of its focus on the ‘utility' side of the SUV equation, BMW says.

To be manufacturer in both right- and left-hand drive guises, the X4 will be built on the same Spartanburg (USA) production line as the X3, X5 and X6.

The new model is shorter than X5 and X6, at just 4648mm, the same length as the X3. It measures 1915mm wide and 1622mm high, meaning it's slightly lower than its derivative model; despite sharing an identical 2810mm wheelbase.

The X4's interior has yet to be sighted, but is believed to look similar to that of the current F25 series X3.

Not surprisingly, the X4 will also share many of the driveline offerings of the X3, though initially, these will be limited to 35i and 28i petrol units and a solitary diesel offering, likely the 20d (if the exhaust outlet on the car pictured is anything to go by).

It is likely both sDrive (two-wheel drive) and xDrive (all-wheel drive) models will be offered.

The production BMW X4 is slated for release at the 2014 NAIAS in Detroit.
