BMW is hard at work on a radically different 5 Series. The pics may not show it, but the car seen here is an all-new model due to reach global markets in 2016.
So say the spy photographers at Automedia. Their handiwork reveals that the next 5 Series will feature different doors (with revised door handles), new A pillars, flatter roofline/rear window and a new vent in the front quarter panels. To our eyes the side profile around the front looks a little bit curvier than the current car, although the bonnet itself looks flatter from dead ahead.
According to Automedia, the overall look of the new 5 Series is inspired by the Vision ConnectedDrive concept car from a couple of years ago, and will mark the start of a new trend based on that style. 5 Series will share its platform with 6 and 7 Series models, and will adopt CFRP (Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Plastic) for major structural panels, including roof, bonnet, boot lid and door skins. Not yet confirmed by BMW is a super-frugal model to kick off the new range. The guys at Automedia believe such a model has been proposed and would be powered by a three-cylinder diesel. It's a throwback to early 5 Series models with small-displacement four-cylinder engines, but those were petrol variants.
