The next-generation Porsche 718 Boxster has just been spied cold-weather testing in Sweden as its anticipated 2024 reveal inches ever nearer.
This is the second time we’ve seen the battery-electric roadster testing now and, while this latest batch of images have been taken at much closer range, there isn’t actually a whole heap new to report given this prototype is identical to the one spotted last month in Germany.
Due for release in 2025, the next-generation Boxster and Cayman twins will form Porsche’s second dedicated EV model line after the Taycan electric sports sedan, but its first battery-powered two-door sports car with both 718 models set to ditch internal combustion with the current generation.
We already know the Stuttgart brand is cooking up a swansong Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS as a last-hurrah for boxer combustion power. It will blend the howling 4.0-litre flat six-cylinder petrol engine of the Cayman GT4 RS with a lightened body, track-focused chassis and stripped-out interior.
A 911 GT3 RS-style Weissach package featuring even more lightweight and go-faster goodies will be optionally available.
The 718’s transition to battery-electric power was previewed last year by the Porsche Mission R electric racer and confirmed earlier this year by company chairman Oliver Blume.
The concept racer not only previewed the tech that will power the next-gen ‘mid-engined’ duo, but also their styling – primarily the squarer front and rear bumpers, Taycan Cross Turismo-style headlights and a more supercar-like overall silhouette – something that’ll be more apparent on the Cayman than the soft-top Boxster.
Similar to the joint development of the Taycan and Audi e-tron GT, as well as the upcoming Macan EV and Q6 e-tron, the new 718 is tipped to serve as the basis for the next-gen Audi TT.
