SPY PICS: Fiat 500 4x4

Fiat's too-cute cult car is about to get down and dirty

While the future of the 500 has been overshadowed by news of the upcoming five-door 500L, the hot-selling three-door hasn’t been left alone either.

Fiat is planning to lift and toughen its little retro bubble car by fitting it with an all-wheel drive system in July this year.

Derived from the cheaper Panda 4X4’s proven system, the 500’s 4X4 option will come only with the biggest of its available engines, which means the 1.4-litre petrol engine and the 1.3-litre turbo-diesel.

There will be little change to the interior package, though the suspension will see a significant retune to bring the rear-end’s body control in line with upmarket expectations.

Fiat sources expect the 500 4X4 to be on sale in Europe in July 2012.
