The MY2017 Fiat 124 Spider has been sprung undergoing camouflaged testing in metropolitan Detroit.
Based on the MY2016 Mazda MX-5 platform the reborn 124 – last seen with a Fiat badge way back in 1982 – the images reveal little of the car’s final appearance, although it’s clear that there’s some MX-5 resemblance to the side and rear at this point.
Originally to be an Alfa, production of the Italian-badged convertible was delayed as a result of the Fiat change, according to FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne. It will be built in Mazda’s Hiroshima plant.
It is believed that the 124 Spider will now receive FCA’s 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, as already seen in some Fiat 500 variants, rather than the naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre Mazda engine as seen in the MX-5. A six-speed manual is expected along with a six-speed automatic option as seen in 500s powered by this engine.
Rumours out of Europe suggest the Fiat 124 Spider could be shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, with sales slated to commence in the Euro summer of 2016.
