SPY PICS: Ford Mach E electric vehicle teased

If you apply more than just a little bit of imagination, these fresh spy photos that are claimed to depict the upcoming Ford Mach E electric vehicle reveal its actual shape and dimensions for the first time.

The Mustang-inspired Mach E, which Ford Chairman Bill Ford promises it will “go like hell” when it is launched to the general public in 2020, has previously only been hinted at in a moody computer-generated image.

Although it’s being billed as a crossover, the Mach E in test mule guise has what looks to be more a conventional body shape, with a low-slung roof and a heavily-truncated tail.

In all honesty though, about the only things that are certain about the Ford EV – which was first announced as the Mach 1 at the 2008 Detroit motor show -- are the shapes of the test mule’s windscreen, A-pillars and front doors.

Otherwise, the only indicators are the position of the headlights, which indicate a more or less conventional grille height, and some barely-visible protrusions suggesting the tapering roofline.

Seemingly about the size of a mid-size SUV (like the Ford Escape), the Mach E is expected to be tagged at the equivalent of $A60,000 when it goes on sale in the US in 2020, following an initial unveiling later this year.

As with the two EVs Ford has committed to releasing in Europe from 2021 (based on Volkswagen’s MEB EV platform), the big question is: will the Ford Mach EV ever be sold in Australia?

Right now the odds aren’t great, since Ford Australia is yet to release any electrified model (that will happen in 2020 when the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid arrives) and has also ruled out local sales of two other additional Ford ‘global’ SUVs, including the born-again Bronco and another all-new small SUV.
