SPY PICS: Golf R estate confirmed
Test driver says Volkswagen has made the decision to go into production with Golf R estateResplendent in red and wearing showroom trim, this Golf estate seen doing some hot track laps on a race circuit in Germany is pretty much what visitors to the Essen motor show in Germany during December this year can expect to see when the new Golf R estate is unveiled for the first time.
Expected to go on sale early in 2015, the stove-hot wagon has been on the drawing board at Volkswagen for a while and will join the existing Golf R hatch with the same 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, as well as the storming 220kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo powerplant (detuned to 206kW for Oz) that takes the hatch to 100km/h in less than 5.0 seconds. The heavier estate version might not be quite as fast, but it should still rate as one of the quickest family workhorses on the market.
It's way too early to get a clear picture on whether or not Volkswagen in Australia would see the Golf R estate as a viable local prospect. If it did, and if pricing relativity remained the same as other Golf models, we could expect to see it sell here for around $56,000 complete with six-speed DSG transmission.
