SPY PICS: Hard-core Ferrari SF90 Speciale takes to the road

More aero features headline new track-focused PHEV hypercar ahead of 2023 launch

Our spy photographers have managed to snap the latest lightweight Ferrari project – reportedly called the Ferrari SF90 Versione Speciale – undergoing real-world testing in Europe ahead of what’s expected to be a 2023 launch.

Fitted with a camouflaged front-end and a disguised S-duct bonnet, the SF90 ‘VS’ will be a lighter, harder and more powerful version of the already rabid Ferrari SF90 plug-in hybrid hypercar.

The Prancing Horse has a long history of offering even more capable versions of their supercars and hypercars, with recent examples including the Ferrari 488 Pista, 458 Speciale and 430 Scuderia.

It’s actually the Pista that lends the flagship PHEV hypercar its new S-ducted bonnet with the elaborate ducting designed to channel air from the bumper upwards through the frunk lid, acting on the momentum variation to generate downforce and thereby up the handling stakes.

Other aero-minded features include two small openings beneath the headlights and some extra/bespoke sculpting down the sides of the front bumper.

While not pictured on this test vehicle, some form of enhanced rear wing is rumoured to be on the cards as well, and we’re sure the rear bumper/diffuser design will become more functional given the extra aero features up front.

With extra grip (and most likely lower weight) comes extra performance, but there’s no word yet on how much extra power the SF90 VS will make compared to its donor car.

Traditionally the lightweight versions of Ferrari’s supercars have developed between 15-37kW more than their standard counterparts – including the insane Ferrari F12 TDF.

For reference, the SF90’s twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain currently develops 735kW of power at a screaming 8000rpm and 800Nm of torque at 6000rpm.
