BMW has only just launched its X4 coupe-cum-SUV into our market, but the Bavarian car maker is already honing a high-performance variant. However, before you start salivating excessively, we should point out it won't be a full-fat 'M' model, but rather a moderately specced-up variant that could be badged X4 M40i – as word has it no X4 M is on the agenda, at least for this generation of the compact SUV.
As evident from these Automedia spy pics, this prototype is devoid of the usual M trademarks, such as the quad exhausts, bespoke wing mirrors and double-bar kidney grille.
However, eagle-eyed readers will have picked up on the fact that this test mule features tailpipes that exit at each corner of the rear bumper, whereas the existing xDrive35i flagship has its two pipes grouped together at the left side of the bumper.
The other noticeable change is the blacked-out kidney grille and lower ride height, indicating a sportier suspension set-up.
It's believed the new X4 range-topper will score an uprated version of the 3.0-litre turbo six-pot used by the xDrive35i, with power hiked from 225kW to a figure around the 250kW mark.
Some sources are speculating the added grunt will justify the introduction of a new X4 M40i badge for the flagship model.
No word as yet on when the hot X4 will debut, but it could be at the Detroit motor show next January, or perhaps the 2015 Frankfurt motor show in just over a year from now.
