SPY PICS: Honda Civic Type-R at the Nurburgring

In company with Golf R, Renault Megane RS and Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, Honda's upcoming Type-R aims to join exalted company
Honda's next Civic Type-R won't be as in-your-face as the hyper-hatch concept shown at this year's Geneva motor show
But if these photos recently snapped by the spy photographers at Automedia at the Nurburgring are any indication, the new Type-R nevertheless looks set to command attention with an extrovert display of intent including pumped wheel arches, deep front apron, rear diffuser, quad exhausts and decent-size alloy wheels. The car pictured was minus the giant spoiler seen at Geneva, but Automedia reckons it – or something close – will likely be a part of the new hot Civic when it hits the streets in late 2015.
Honda is apparently keen to imbue the next Type-R with a blatant sense of purpose and the spy photos show it is clearly heading down that path. Fundamental to this is the expected adoption of a blown 2.0-litre engine, not a normally aspirated VTEC, with a power output expected to reach beyond the Geneva car's 206kW towards 240kW and accompanied by something approaching 400Nm of torque.
Clearly, the aim to is to mount a direct challenge to Volkswagen's 2.0-litre 206kW/380Nm Golf R, and Ford's upcoming 2.3-litre Focus RS that is expected to wind out as much as 260kW. Like the Ford, the Honda will rely on front wheel drive to transfer all the power to the ground; the Volkswagen uses the company's 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
As a clear indication of where it's aimed, the Honda was accompanied at the Nurburgring by an A45 AMG Benz, a Volkswagen Golf R and a Renault Megane RS.
With the ongoing re-writing of lap records by road cars at the Nurburgring, Honda is on the record as saying it expects the new Type-R to become the fastest front-drive car around the iconic circuit . . .
