SPY PICS: Hyundai takes aim at Germany's finest

New four-door coupe from South Korea targets Mercedes and Volkswagen

This is the first look at Hyundai's attempts to take on the top end of town with its own take on the four-door coupe-like sedan. The test mule was spotted undergoing cold weather testing this week in Scandinavia.

Believed to be based on the same platform as the next generation Sonata the new model will go up against the Mercedes Benz CLS, Volkswagen Passat CC and Opel Insignia in the new segment. Our computer generated renderings suggests a clean and stylish look for the new car that will help it fit in against such company.

It is expected that the new model will also get the same engine selection as the new Sonata, with the choice of 123kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 186kW 3.3-litre V6 petrol engines, plus the 2.0-litre CRDi diesel with 111kW.

Although there have been suggestions both the new Sonata and CC could appear later this year it is considered more likely both will wait until 2010.
