SPY PICS: Insignia no longer concealed

Opel's Vectra replacement is due for international launch before the end of '08

Here's Opel's successor to the Vectra, named Insignia, undergoing durability testing at an undisclosed track in Germany.

Caught with just minimal camouflage by those dogged, dogging spy photographers at Carparazzi, the Insignia will be larger than the Vectra.

By virtue of being built on the Epsilon 2 FWD platform, the new Opel will be closer in size to the Passat than the Vectra is currently.

High spec versions will be fitted with a system called Traffic Assist, mentioned in our earlier report (more here). The Traffic Assist system, with its lasers, videos and electronic brain, will effectively be the world's first 'driverless' car, according to the bods at Carparazzi. Different drivetrain options will be available, including an AWD version, a 2.7-litre turbodiesel V6 and a 2.8-litre petrol V6.

As we wrote at the time, the Insignia is unlikely to displace the Epica from Holden's line-up and until Ford gets its act together with supply of the Mondeo, Holden won't be feeling much heat from that corner. Nor will Holden see any point trying to compete with some of the heavies in the medium segment (Camry, Mazda6), but there's always the possibility that the Insignia may either arrive here as an up-market complement to the Epica or even provide the basis for a Korean-built Epica replacement down the track.

We'll keep you posted.
