Kia’s answer to the Holden Commodore has been spied testing ahead of its global debut.
The Kia Stinger is the Korean brand’s first rear-drive passenger car. It is spotted here shrouded in camouflage as engineers carry out final testing ahead of an anticipated debut at the Detroit motor show in January.
It is understood the production model will be heavily based on the stunning Kia GT concept shown off at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.
The flagship sedan – codenamed CK – will be available with a 270kW twin-turbo V6 for about $50,000. It will land, rather ironically, just as the locally-built Holden Commodore SS is permanently laid to rest and eschewed by the imported next-generation Opel Insignia.
Kia has been coy on the final details of the Stinger (also referred to as the GT), except to say they will be targeting Holden Commodore buyers with the new model.
“It’s perfect timing,” Kia Australia boss Damien Meredith recently told motoring.com.au. “CK will arrive just before the unfortunate demise of Australian car manufacturing, and it will appeal to the same buyers in that segment. It’s a great opportunity for us.”
The Stinger is due to land in Australian showrooms from the third quarter of 2017. Like all Kias, it will undergo a rigorous Australian chassis tuning program before its release.
