SPY PICS: Kia’s cut-price Benz CLS rival

Korean car-maker caught developing powerful production version of GT concept, could be here by 2018

Kia has been caught secretly testing a production version of the svelte four-door GT coupe concept it unveiled back in 2011 at the Frankfurt motor show.

Hidden under heavy camouflage is a car that’s set to go head-to-head with cars like the Volkswagen Passat CC and, at least in design terms, the significantly more expensive Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7

Under the skin, according to our snappers, the Korean coupe-cum-sedan keeps the imposing proportions of the show car, although this might also have something to do with the fact that the GT is thought to be based on the Hyundai Genesis.

If true, expect the GT to be rear-wheel drive, with the option of all-wheel drive in some markets.

Under the bonnet, the Kia flagship could even come equipped with the Genesis’ 313kW/519Nm 5.0-litre V8 that’s available in the US, although most will probably be fitted with the less powerful 232kW/397Nm 3.8-litre V6 we get.

Expected the all-new Kia GT to be on sale from 2018 with prices beginning around $50,000.
