These spy shots show the latest offering from Italian sportscar stable Maserati; a convertible version of its stunning Gran Turismo. Due to be unveiled officially at next year's Geneva motor show this mule was caught testing at the Nurburgring earlier this week.
The Spyder -- as it is tipped to be known -- will make it a three model lineup for the brand alongside the Grand Turismo and Quattroporte. Because of the close ties between Maserati and its sister brand Ferrari -- which released the California convertible late last year -- the Spyder will be priced below the Prancing Horse drop-top. That means its main rivals will be the Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Bentley Continental GTC, BMW M6 convertible and Jaguar XKR convertible.
From the information gleaned by our spy photographers at Carparazzi the Spyder borrows the same folding hard-top technology used on the California. That will give it an edge over most of its rivals that persist with traditional canvas tops.
Mechanically the Spyder should be a match for the Gran Turismo and unlike the previous Gran Sport-based convertible the new model will be a true 2+2 seater.
