Black is back! Spy photographers have spotted what's set to be the craziest Mercedes-AMG GT R coupe ever.
The Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series was snapped at the Nurburgring this week in all its camouflaged glory, sporting big air-vents in the bonnet, front strakes and a huge rear spoiler.
Judging by its race car looks, we're expecting plenty of downforce and a more advanced active aero package than before.
While few details are known about the high-performance coupe, what we do know is that it's out to rival Porsche's 911 GT2 RS and McLaren 720S.
And, it sounds equipped to do so, with Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers confirming the Black Series will be lighter and much more powerful than the current GT R.
The Black Series is due in Australia in 2020 and is expected to get a pumped up version of the GT R's 430kW/700Nm 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine.
That means we can expect significantly higher power figures, especially given AMG's previous SLS Black Series pumped out 464kW of power back in 2012. The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Black Series from the same year was worth 380kW.
Therefore, expect to see at least 500kW from the biturbo V8 -- a figure which could be achieved with a little help from some form of electrification, such as hybrid augmentation.
The current king of the AMG GT world, the Mercedes-AMG GT Pro, has already been ruled out Down Under, meaning this more potent – but also rarer – Black Series will have to suffice for punters with a need for speed.
While the GT R Black Series will be Mercedes' most fearsome track weapon this side of the AMG GT3 racer, it won't be the craziest street-legal production model in the German manufacturer's line-up.
That honour will go to the $5 million Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar, eight examples of which will come to Australia -- eventually.
Powered by a bonkers 746kW 1.6-litre turbo-petrol V6 hybrid powertrain pilfered from a Mercedes F1 race car, the left-hand-drive-only German hypercar has been delayed and likely won't be here until 2021.
