This could be the world's most powerful hatch.
New spy photos of what appears to be the Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG Black Edition have been snapped in Germany, undergoing testing at the Nurburgring.
Benz has not yet confirmed the existence of a highly-strung Black version of the A 45 AMG, but the telltale signs are clear as day.
Large motorsport alloys and flared wheel arches reveal a wider track for this test mule, and though the exhaust system at the rear looks bent out of place, it's hotch-potch design suggests AMG's whitecoats have fettled the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine to pump out even more power than the A 45 AMG's 265kW/450Nm.
Expect numbers to be around 300kW/500Nm for the all-wheel drive road warrior, and when paired to a seven-speed dual clutch auto transmission it should be fast.
It will also get the usual Black magic, with bigger brakes, more aero bodywork including a large rear diffuser, and chassis tweaks to improve its at-the-limit control.
The regular A 45 AMG is launching in Australia next week, dispatches the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h. But before the car has even gone on sale in Australia, there is already a queue of buyers lining up for the $74,900 hyper hatch, stretching out to up to nine months.
Ironically, there's a strong chance the limited edition A 45 AMG Black could be sold out in Australia before Mercedes-Benz officially confirms it.
