SPY PICS: Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV hits the road

Mercedes’ all-new electric EQE SUV caught testing for the first time on public roads

Our spy photographers in Germany have provided the first look at the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV out testing on public roads.

First announced in October 2020, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV will be based on the curvaceous and futuristic EQE sedan that was revealed in full at the recent Munich motor show and is locked in for an Aussie launch in the second half of next year.

Details on the SUV derivative remain thin, however we already know the high-riding EQE will be based on Mercedes’ dedicated EVA2 platform that underpins several members of the ever-expanding EQ family, including the EQE sedan and the EQS flagship limousine.

The EQS is due for release in Australia early in 2022, while we expect the EQE SUV to be unveiled overseas next year ahead of an Australian launch in the first half of 2023.

From the photos, it’s difficult to tell exactly what lies beneath the squiggly design of the engineering development car’s camouflage wrap caught testing on German roads, however the SUV’s silhouette – especially with its rounded front-end – is reminiscent of the smaller EQE sedan.

Riding on chunky, enclosed alloy wheels, slim LED daytime running lights (DRLs) can be seen above LED headlights up front, while a full-width LED light bar will likely feature at the rear, just like the sedan.

Inside, the SUV is tipped to get the EQE sedan’s huge wall-to-wall Hyperscreen digital display.

Powertrain options should also be shared with the sedan equivalent, opening with an entry-level rear-wheel drive model using a 215kW/530Nm electric motor and 90kWh battery that’s said to offer a driving range of between 545km and 660km.

Count on twin-motor, all-wheel drive versions as well, along with bigger batteries on-board.

However, as we reported last month, plans for AMG 63-badged EQ variants appear to have been scrapped, with Mercedes-AMG’s chief technical officer Jochen Hermann admitting that some members of the EV family are simply too heavy to warrant a top-shelf performance variant.

Instead, the ‘53’ designation will be used, so count on a Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 SUV to be in the mix.
