The larger wheel and tyre combination and elevated ride height of this Mercedes G 63 AMG signal the subject of these spy photos is far removed from the standard model.
Clearly this vehicle – dubbed 'the green monster' by the spy photographers – is a 4x4 version of the 6x6 model driven last year by motoring.com.au correspondent Michael Taylor. There's no further information on this monster, which, notwithstanding its exterior colour, is almost certainly not green in any other sense. Perhaps it's a test bed for the AMG GT's 4.0-litre V8 in this new application. That might serve to explain the revised front apron, which can be compared with that of the standard model, appearing in the role of support vehicle in these pictures.
Should the G 63 soldier on with the current 5.5-litre powerplant in this high-riding form, the production version is presumably intended for select markets in the Middle East. Current asking price for the standard G 63 is closing in on $232,000, which is probably a big ask for all but a very few. Benz in Australia has sold 41 units of the G-Class for the year to date, with an unspecified number the AMG models, the rest comprising the six-cylinder G 350.
Even more expensive, an uber G 63 is probably not high on Mercedes-Benz Australia's wishlist.
