SPY PICS: Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG for 2013

Watch out for rortier flagship Benz performance sedan as the company gears up for S63 AMG update

Mercedes-Benz has wheeled out a camouflaged prototype at a facility near the Nurburgring, and the new car appears to be the 2013 version of the 'bahn-storming S63 AMG.

Draped in matt black cladding, the test mule barely disguises its underlying details, including regular S-Class tail lights, headlights and grille, plus new, larger front air intakes. There are signs of more substantial brake rotors behind the multi-spoke 20-inch AMG wheels too. The prototype is sitting pretty low, and there are reports some extra fine-tuning of the suspension could be part of the MY2013 program. All this fits within the S63's status in the flagship sedan hierarchy, and the requirement that it has the ability to withstand the thrust of the mighty twin-turbo engine.

The S63 is expected to continue with the current 5.5-litre V8 where it develops 400kW and a rousing 800Nm of torque, all directed rearwards by the Benz AMG Speedshift seven-speed MCT transmission.

Little else is known about what else Benz is planning for the 2013 S63 AMG, but there will undoubtedly also be some visual and comfort tweaks to lift its status even further. It is likely the upgraded S63 will appear later rather than sooner, so late 2013 for a Euro launch would seem to be a good guess.
