These are not the sharpest shots we’ve seen from master spy photographers Automedia, but they show plenty of basic info about the upcoming Shooting Brake wagon version of the slinky Mercedes-Benz CLA four-door “coupe.” The fifth car to source its beginnings from the Benz MFA platform, the CLA wagon looks like a scaled-down CLS Shooting Brake, even if its front-drive underpinnings make it anything but.
Minute details of the forthcoming small Benz wagon are not available from these telephoto lens shots, but it looks as if the car just might feature side window lines close to those of the regular A-Class hatchback. The window line from the C-pillar rearwards is difficult to decipher in these fuzzy shots, but it appears more horizontal upper window frames will match the flatter wagon roofline. As a result, rear-seat headroom should be better than that of the four-door coupe.
Where the big space gains appear to be evident are in the extension of the body further past the rear wheel arches to provide storage capacity closer to what you’d expect of a wagon. The wheelbase is expected to be identical to that of the CLA and the A-Class hatch.
The spy shots also indicate via the large wheels, aggressive frontal treatment and twin-exhaust rear apron that, like the CLA and A-Class, the Shooting Brake will be available in all wheel drive AMG form, complete with 265kW/450Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and Speedshift dual-clutch transmission. Regular front-drive versions are likely to dip into the A-Class bin, which contains 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, as well as the 1.8-litre turbo-diesel, and the Benz seven-speed dual-clutch auto transmission.
As previously reported, the CLA Shooting Brake is not expected to appear before 2015, priced at a premium of at least A$2000 above CLA equivalents.
