SPY PICS: Mercedes CLS Facelift

Merc's large sedan-that-wants-to-be-a-coupe has gone under the knife for a mid-life freshen up
Mercedes-Benz's CLS has now been around for more than four years in second-gen form, which means it's mid-life facelift time for the slinky sedan.
Pictured alongside in these Automedia images is a mildly disguised prototype of the updated CLS, revealing a handful of exterior tweaks to bring its look in line with the latest E-Class and S-Class.
You'll notice the front bumpers have been completely redesigned, now incorporating larger and more rounded looking air intakes in their lower section.
The headlights have also been reworked, incorporating new LED daytime-running lights at the top of the cluster.
Going on these images, the rear of the car doesn't appear to have changed significantly, with the taillights, exhausts and diffuser looking much the same as the existing car.
It's not just a cosmetic update, as the latest CLS is expected to score the Magic Body Control camera-based adaptive suspension system that debuted last year in the new S-Class.
The CLS is also expected to receive the latest DISTRONIC PLUS cruise control with Steering Assist, Cross-Traffic Assist, and Pre-Safe brake assist with pedestrian recognition.
The updated line-up will also benefit from a couple of new engines, with the CLS 500 expected to gain the same twin-turbo 4.6-litre V8 as the S 500, in which it ekes out 335kW
As is the case now, the range-topper will be the CLS63 AMG S, punching out 430kW from its 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8.
The biggest change is expected to be the introduction of Mercedes-Benz's new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission in lieu of the seven-speed unit used by the current model. This alone is expected to significantly boost refinement and fuel economy.
The interior is also revamped, with the changes reportedly including a new steering wheel and larger control unit in the centre console.
Expect the updated CLS to launch internationally over the next few months, which means we could see it here before the end of the year.
