SPY PICS: MY18 Mitsubishi ASX

Mitsubishi will soon release another upgraded version of one of Australia’s top-selling SUVs, the ASX, as evidenced by these exclusive spy shots.

In fact, our sources have confirmed an updated MY18 ASX will be launched in September, bringing a range of cosmetic and specification upgrades, including the diagonal lower LED daytime driving lights you see here.

Snapped by motoring.com.au reader Paul Dowsley in the Melbourne CBD recently, this ASX looks different enough for Mitsubishi Australia to have to take fresh video for promotional purposes.

Apart from the DRLs -- which return to Mitsubishi’s baby SUV for the first time following its recent facelift in November 2016, when it scored the company’s latest ‘Dynamic Shield’ frontal design – the revised ASX appears to wear LED tail-lights.

The minor cosmetic updates continue inside, where the ASX will also bring an enhanced standard equipment list, possibly including Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity.

Stand by for full official details within weeks, but we expect the current ASX model range to remain unchanged.

That means a line-up ranging between $25,000 and $37,000 plus on-road costs and comprising two equipment grades (LS and XLS), two engines (2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel), two drivetrains (2WD and AWD) and three transmissions -- five-speed manual and six-speed automatic and CVT.

Despite being seven years old (released in August 2010), the ASX remains in strong demand in Australia, where it was the top-selling small SUV last month, the second most popular compact SUV behind the Mazda CX-3 so far this year and the sixth best-selling SUV bar none to July 2017.

A second-generation ASX isn’t far away from Mitsubishi, which will first launch the all-new Eclipse Cross here in December, following its world debut at the Tokyo motor show in late October.

Mitsubishi’s additional small SUV will be positioned below the mid-size Outlander but above the pint-size ASX, which is expected to be renewed next year.
