SPY PICS: New Audi Q5 scythes through Austrian alps

Next-generation mid-size German SUV continues testing in Europe as it prepares for battle with new Mercedes-Benz GLC

A camouflaged 2023 Audi Q5 has been spotted (again) undergoing real-world testing in the Austrian alps ahead of an expected reveal sometime next year.

Wrapped in the same elaborate camo as the previously spotted example, the obvious difference here is the inherent lack of mud and grime; giving us a better look at some of the finer body details and differences between the two vehicles.

As previously reported, the new Audi Q5 will grow in size compared to its popular predecessor – primarily in the wheelbase, which should result in a more spacious second row and extra cargo space.

The front and rear styling has predictably been updated and will follow the industry-wide trend of looking angrier and more aggressive through the use of bigger intakes, narrower headlights and sharper angles.

One difference we can see on the more recently snapped vehicle is the inclusion of oblong exhaust finishers, which confirms the new Q5 is inching closer to being finished.

For what it’s worth, this vehicle was also devoid of a tow bar.

Tucked in behind a truck as it descended the mountain road, the clean Q5 was still fitted with prototype-specific segmented tail-light clusters, which tells us they will be among the biggest changes at the rear compared to the current model.

A swoopy Sportback derivative of the new Audi Q5 is yet to be spotted, but we wouldn’t expect the more curvaceous model to appear for at least another couple of months.

In terms of powertrains, our sources in Europe have suggested the Q5’s current crop of petrol and diesel powertrains will be carried over, albeit upgraded and paired with increasingly advanced mild-hybrid systems.

Plug-in hybrid power is also expected to make its way into the new Q5 range, but we’ll wait and see if they make it Down Under, where the existing Q5 current trails the BMW X3 in its sales segment .

Also out-selling the Q5 in the mid-size luxury SUV class it once led is the new Lexus NX, Volvo XC60 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, a new generation of which will be revealed on June 1.
