The 2024 BMW M5 has been spotted hot-lapping the Nurburgring again, this time with less camouflage than we’ve seen previously and rolling on what look to be production-spec alloy wheels.
This is our best look yet at BMW’s upcoming new flagship super sedan and it’s clear from the glowing front brake discs it will be one seriously capable thing – as every M5 has been.
Befitting of the monstrous twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain lurking under its bonnet, the BMW M5 will take on a far more aggressive demeanour in its next generation, thanks to a frowning front lighting signature, aggro kidney grille and trapezoid lower intake arrangement above a dedicated front splitter.
The only other new details of note are the cool-looking cobweb-style alloys, which we expect to make it across to the production version.
BMW has been tight-lipped as to when we might see the new M5 without any of the camouflage and secrecy, but rumour has it the Bavarian’s brand’s new four-door flagship will be launched sometime in 2024 – roughly a year after the new-generation BMW 5 Series hits the European market in 2023.
The new 5 Series line-up is anticipated to comprise a relative familiar array of petrol, diesel (Europe) and plug-in hybrid powertrains that will ultimately culminate in the reveal of the M5.
Before then, however, an M550i or next-gen equivalent will serve as an entrée to the new M5 both in terms of appearance and capabilities without risking any cannibalism or unwanted overlap.
But many people will be eagerly awaiting the return of a niche favourite in the form of the BMW M5 Touring, which was recently teased by none other than BMW M boss Frank van Meel, who told punters to keep their eyes peeled for just such a thing at the Nurburgring.
“Keep your eyes open, and if you see something like that on the Nurburgring, we’re going to do it,” he told CarBuzz earlier this month.
While a potential M5 Touring sighting could happen at almost any moment, odds are the flying five-door won’t surface officially until after the M5 sedan as had its time in the limelight and bloodied the noses of its chief rivals, pointing to a late 2024 or even 2025 debut.
