Our spy photographers have snapped fresh images of the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupe in Germany this week, ahead of its 2021 launch.
Expected on sale in Australia by the end of next year, the new G42-generation two-door BMW 2 Series Coupe will follow in the tyre tracks of the latest BMW 1 Series hatch and new 2 Series Gran Coupe sedan.
Unlike them, however, BMW’s next new small car will not be based on a front/all-wheel drive platform, but the same rear/all-wheel drive CLAR platform that underpins every mainstream BMW model from the larger 3 Series upwards.
That means the next-generation BMW M2 and M2 Competition performance coupes will remain rear-drive and continue to be available in manual and automatic form.
This covered-up coupe was spotted out the front of a logistics centre in Munich, where it was apparently being unloaded off a truck.
First images of the next-generation G42 2 Series Coupe were leaked in April and these fresh spy shots confirm it will bring a much edgier design than both the model it replaces and the 2 Series Gran Coupe.
Up front, curvaceous new headlights can be seen peeking out of the camo, while the narrower kidney grille will be flanked by a pair of huge triangular lower air intakes.
It’s hard to make out much of the smallest BMW coupe’s rear-end, aside from the test mule’s trapezoidal dual exhaust outlets.
As we’ve previously reported, the 2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe will likely be powered by the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines in the existing 1 and 2 Series models.
Meantime, the sportier M240i replacement should remain powered by a 3.0-litre turbo straight-six with around 260kW on tap.
And if the next BMW M2 inherits the same 350kW-plus S58 twin-turbo six as the upcoming BMW M3 and M4, it will be an absolute corker.
