Anticipated to go on sale in Europe some time in 2018, the next-generation W167 Mercedes-Benz GLE is expected to not only go on a significant diet but, in recognition of real-world use, will also be offered in 2WD form.
This will mirror BMW's base X5 sDrive25d model, continuing the ongoing urbanisation of the SUV segment and part of a weight-trimming programme that is expected to bring the big Benz below two tonnes – in entry-level form at least. Today's GLE sits well above that.
Currently, the GLE remains based on the old W166 M-Class architecture that first saw the light of day in 2011. Seven years on, the next-gen W167 will be new from the ground up.
Not a lot can be gleaned from the spy photos, but it is clear the styling of the new SUV will be entirely evolutionary, although a close look at the arched upper side window lines indicates the possibility of a slightly curvier overall shape consistent with today's Mercedes-Benz design language. Word is that the GLE will be more 'aero' in its next generation too, reducing the coefficient of drag from 0.32 to 0.30Cd.
The GLE will sit on the MHA platform already in use in the GLC, while the line-up of powerplants could be expected to include those already in use in the new-generation E-Class, including petrol, diesel and hybrid. It's being mooted that fuel consumption will be reduced across the GLE range by around 20 per cent.
It's also expected that much of the next-generation safety technology introduced in the new E-Class, including a level of self-driving capability, will transfer over to the GLE.
And prepare for a GLE coupe version to follow some time after the launch of the regular SUV.
