SPY PICS: Next-gen BMW 3 Series spied

It's not due to launch for another three years but we've grabbed this early sneak peak of BMW's bread and butter model

BMW has already begun gearing up for the imminent launch of the new 5 Series, but its baby brother that has grabbed our attention.

This 3 Series prototype was snapped by our friends at Carparazzi in Germany ahead of its official unveiling in 2012 and beneath the psychedelic swirls it's obvious that the new model carries over similar proportions as the existing car.

That means wheels at each corner with very short overhangs to carry on the 3 Series legacy.

Also noticeable is the brand's latest design flourish, the 'Hofmeister kick' around the glasshouse. It has also been used on the new 7 Series and X1 as BMW transitions for the controversial 'flame surfacing' design theme of former style guru Chris Bangle.

Although there is heavy camouflage around the front end Carparazzi has been able to glean some information on what it will look like when the disguise is removed. Not surprisingly the trademark kidney grille will be retained, albeit slightly wider than the current model. It is also expected to feature a new headlight cluster that fits tightly alongside the grille.

Under the bonnet BMW is expected to continue its current trend of downsizing and using forced induction to find more power and cut consumption and emissions. Speculation is rife that the Bavarian company is also working on a hybrid powertrain with a three-cylinder petrol engine; which would almost certainly utilise Efficient Dynamics technology.

As for the coupe and convertible models, expect more styling differentiation this time around as the modular construction of the car saves build costs; meaning more money can be spent design. The convertible will also retain the folding metal hardtop of the current car.
