SPY PICS: Opel sizes up Astra GSI
Latest spy pics indicate Opel's GSI Astra is edging closer to realityAccording to these spy snaps captured for posterity by Carparazzi, Opel is well advanced in development of a GSI version of its new Astra.
The car caught on the roads during Europe's recent deep freeze shows most of the usual clues indicating a sportier version of an otherwise pedestrian car: Lower stance, additional exhaust pipe and gutsier front and rear bumpers with enlarged air intake up front.
According to the blokes at Carparazzi, the Astra GSI is expected to use Opel's 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine with an output of around 142kW.
Rumours suggest the new GSI will, as it appears in these images, come in five-door hatch form only. It is also being suggested that a future, hotter OPC version would use the three-door body.
Opel will start selling cars in Australia in 2012, with the new Astra part of a contingent including the Corsa city car and the mid-size Insignia. It has been reported that performance versions of the Astra, along with hot Corsa and Insignia models, could be in line for an Australian introduction in late 2013.
Will that include the Astra GSI? We'll have to wait and see.
