SPY PICS: Peugeot readies its Yeti fighter
All-new Peugeot 2008 compact crossover gets set for its Geneva show debut – and Australian showrooms – later this yearWe saw the final production version of Peugeot’s all-new 2008 a week or so ago, and now Carparazzi has snapped a prototype of the compact French crossover cold-weather testing in sub-zero conditions.
Covered in psychedelic camouflage, the 208-based 2008 seen here is Peugeot’s answer to an array of existing city-SUVs, including the Nissan Dualis, Mitsubishi ASX, Subaru XV and Skoda Yeti – as well as a host of upcoming urban crossovers like the Holden Trax, Nissan Juke, Ford EcoSport and a high-riding version of Renault’s new Clio.
First revealed at the 2012 Beijing motor show (the Urban Crossover concept also appeared at the Sydney show last October), the 2008 has been confirmed to make its world debut at the Geneva motor show in March, before going on sale in Australia in October.
As we’ve reported, the 2008 is likely to remain a petrol-only proposition in Australia because more expensive diesel engines would push the price too far beyond the car’s expected circa-$25,000 starting price to be viable here.
In Europe, the seven-engine 2008 powertrain range will include a new version of PSA’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol unit, along with 1.4 and 1.6 e-HDI diesels.
Belying its pretensions as an off-roader, the 2008 will reportedly be offered solely in front-wheel drive guise, albeit with a ‘Grip Control’ traction system similar to that used on the larger 3008.
At 4160mm long and 1740mm wide, the 2008 is slightly shorter and narrower than the Trax, and these spy pics show it will retain the high-riding five-door profile of the fluorescent yellow concept that graced the Beijing and Sydney shows.
As evidenced by official images of the production version, the road-going 2008 will also retain the concept’s elaborately sculpted headlights and boomerang-shaped tail-lights, as well as metallic-look inserts for the front bumper, side sills and roof rails.
Australia’s version will be sourced from France, but the 2008 will also be produced in China and Brazil.
