SPY PICS: Polestar 5 spotted not breaking down in Sweden

Porsche Taycan rival seen skating on thick ice just days after the closely related Lotus Envya conked out

Geely’s answer to the Porsche Taycan, the Polestar 5, has just been spotted testing in northern Sweden – not far from where its twin under the skin, the Lotus Envya, was also spotted breaking down just a few days prior.

However, unlike its sister model from Lotus – which also falls under the Chinese auto giant’s umbrella – Polestar’s upcoming electric grand tourer was fully functional and not hanging around as it navigated an ice driving course etched into a frozen lake.

While there’s not a whole lot to report in terms of technical intel or design updates, the cosmetic similarities between the two EVs are almost uncanny when it comes to their overall proportions, which shouldn’t be all that surprising given they’re likely to be based on the same platform and will both aim directly at Porsche’s pioneering sports sedan.

Polestar is yet to confirm exactly which unique high-performance EV platform the Polestar 5 is based on, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s derived from Lotus’ latest ‘Electric Premium Architecture’ given both brands form key pillars within the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which also includes Volvo.

To our eyes at least, the Polestar 5 looks to be the more attractive product but we’ll reserve full judgment until both models have been officially revealed in full.

The most powerful version(s) is set to outstrip the monstrous Taycan Turbo S with around 650kW of power and close to 900Nm of torque, however, the 1050Nm Porsche will still have the edge in terms of grunt.

Such phenomenal power figures will obviously come courtesy of a dual-motor EV drivetrain anticipated to be fed by a circa-100kWh battery pack, which in turn should yield a range of around 500km; Less powerful versions will more than likely cover more than 600km on a single charge.

Perhaps the best news from a local perspective is that Polestar confirmed the 5 for the Australian market almost a year ago, meaning the high-performance electric sedan should arrive in local Polestar ‘spaces’ (showrooms) sometime in 2025.
