SPY PICS: Porsche Boxster Spyder RS hits the track

Flagship 718 rag-top set to honour Porsche’s R&D facilities with special seat embroidery

The upcoming 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS has been spotted testing for the second time in as many weeks, except this time the track-hardened convertible was pumping out laps of the infamous Nurburgring with its roof back.

Unequivocally the same vehicle we saw last week, given the matching number plates, wheels and body, this largely undisguised prototype reveals another key element of its character – the ‘Weissach RS’ embossed head restraints crowning its lightweight carbon bucket seats.

The admittedly small but important detail confirms the car’s identity as the absolute flagship of the 718 Boxster range, while the ‘Weissach’ name – as seen previously on the ultimate 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar – serves as a nod to Porsche’s own R&D centre and private test track in the small village of, you guessed it, Weissach – just near Stuttgart.

With such a small amount of time passing since the car was last spotted, there’s nothing else to report in terms of the vehicle’s appearance or specs, most of which was covered off in our previous story.

To recap though, the Spyder RS will be the drop-top equivalent to the immensely capable Porsche Cayman GT4 RS, with which it’s tipped to share its 368kW/450Nm 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat six, lightened body panels, more focused chassis set-up and stripped-out interior.

The end result will likely be a 911 Cabriolet-slaying, lightweight mid-engine sports car aimed squarely at purists who want the wind rushing through their hair as they listen to a naturally aspirated six revving out to 9000rpm.

Given Australia’s endless appetite for performance cars, the Spyder RS will almost certainly be offered Down Under but we doubt it will arrive before Porsche’s ultimate track weapon – the Porsche 911 GT3 RS – which is due for reveal on August 17.
