SPY PICS: Porsche Cayenne goes modular in 2017

Next-generation Porsche Cayenne will migrate to VW's MLB platform

The next-generation Porsche Cayenne, underpinned by a brand-new platform (new to Porsche that is, because it's already in use in Audi's Q7), will arrive in global markets late next year.

But, although it's being rumoured the new Porsche SUV will feature more aggressive styling – along with standout details such as a Macan-style clamshell bonnet – this test mule spotted in breathtaking alpine countryside gives absolutely nothing away, because it is fundamentally based on an existing body affixed to the new MLB platform.

About the only things we can spot here are new wing mirrors, and a different meeting point for the leading edge of the front door, A-pillar and front wings. These give some clue to the expected clamshell bonnet arrangement.

Expectations are that the new platform, with its extensive use of carbon fibre, aluminium and ultra high-strength steel, will save something like 100kg while also improving overall rigidity. The interior, though conceptually similar to the current model's, is expected to be all-new, with further upgrades to the infotainment system and a more intuitive driver interface.

The engine line-up is expected to include atmo and turbo V6s, a plug-in hybrid, a twin-turbo V8 and, presuming the Volkswagen Group's Dieselgate kerfuffle will be well sorted out by the time of launch, a turbo-diesel V6. Although it remains little more than conjecture, there is also some rumour that an all-electric version could be in the wings.

We could expect to see an Australian launch of the new Cayenne at some point during the first half of 2018.
